We pride ourselves at CALN for keeping it straight with our readers. So let me say this: South Carolina schools deserve a round of applause.
With the release of the 2026 SC School Report Cards, more schools than ever scored Good or Excellent in the history of the current rating system, according to the state Department of Education.
The share of schools earning the lowest marks (Below Average or Unsatisfactory) is at an all-time low.
The latest results show impressive gains across the board for students.
- The number of Excellent-rated schools rose from 270 to 320
- High-poverty schools were among the top improving schools, according to SCDE
- Almost a quarter of elementary schools improved their overall rating
- The state’s graduation rate reached a decade high of 87.5%, while college and career readiness rates continue to improve

What’s driving school improvement?
At a recent press conference, State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver highlighted recent changes and reforms that could be driving improvement.
- Starting teacher pay has increased measurably in recent years, currently sitting at $55,000
- Lawmakers passed the Educator Assistance Act in 2025, aimed at improving teacher working conditions and salary transparency
- K-3 teachers must complete a science of reading training program, part of an effort to bolster literacy instruction
- South Carolina enacted a ban on cellphones during the school day in 2024
And while it’s too early to measure the effect of the grading floor ban passed earlier this year, that too represents a positive development for academic integrity and school standards.
There’s still plenty of work ahead to ensure South Carolina reaches its target of 75% grade-level proficiency by 2030. However, the latest report card results point to real progress in our schools. Teachers, students, and everyone involved should be proud of what they’ve accomplished.
