There are 10 school calendar bills eligible for discussion during the North Carolina Legislature’s 2024 short session.
Five of those bills are statewide, and five are for LEAs scattered throughout the state.
Each statewide bill provides flexibility to all or certain school systems in adopting the school calendar.
- H86 will provide this flexibility to all districts. It also provides limitations to the start and end dates of the school year.
- H106 will provide flexibility for the following school districts: Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Davidson County, Guilford County, Jackson County, Lexington City, Stokes County, Swain County, Thomasville City, Transylvania County, and Winston Salem/Forsyth County.
- H115 will provide flexibility for: Burke County Public Schools, Catawba County Schools, Cleveland County Schools, Davie County Public Schools, Hickory Public Schools, Newton-Conover City Schools, Rutherford County Schools, Wake County Public Schools, and Yadkin County Schools.
- H163 will provide this flexibility for Craven County and Union County Schools as laid out in §1. It also provides exceptions for Hyde County due to its geography and tourism, as laid out in §2.
- H176 will provide this flexibility for Lee and Harnett County Schools.
The following House Bills are specific to certain LEAs.
- H195 will provide additional flexibility to Roanoke Rapids Graded School District in adopting the school calendar.
- H221 will allow Yadkin County Schools and Davie County Schools to align their school calendars with Surry County Community College’s or Davidson-Davie Community College’s school calendars.
- H236 will allow Carteret County Schools to align their school calendar with Carteret Community College’s calendar.
- H239 will provide additional flexibility to Johnston County Schools in adopting the school calendar.
- H306 will provide flexibility to Granville County and Vance County schools in adopting the school calendar.
There are currently no senate bills regarding the school calendar.
